According to one local legend, a large spider living in the caves had captured a local princess. She was rescued by a Prince who killed the spider with a bow and arrow. On slaying the spider, the Prince cried out "Pinguay"! Pindaya is a corruption of the Burmese word Pinguya meaning: "Taken the Spider". So this is why the region became named Pindaya.
